IFGE 2004

The 2004 International Foundation for Gender Education (IFGE) conference is over.  This year I did not do a summary of some of the programs as to be honest you need to attend and experience the impact that this event has on lives, on families.

I was there to provide a presentation on intersex.  This went exceptionally well this year and while there were empty seats we again ran out of time for discussion continuing in the lobby and elsewhere throughout the conference.  I also had the privilege to be part of the veteran’s (TAVA) presentation facilitated by Monica Helms.   The remaining time I enjoyed other presentations and the fellowship of friends old and new.

The food and entertainment was excellent.  This is being only one way the attention to detail of the IFGE staff was manifested.  During one of the meals I was privileged to hear some new writing from Kate Bornstein, I do hope that she publishes this.  Just when you think you have Kate figured out she through you a curve ball.  As I sat and listened to her renderings I knew that these indeed had come from the depths of her heart, in that hidden place of memories so dear to us all.  As I heard the words I understood her reflections of her father as tears came to my eyes, thinking of my own father, now passed.  If her works were titled ‘Reflections’ it would not surprise me.  Thanks Kate for the tears.

Speaking of curve balls the presentation of IFGE’s very own Hawk Stone was indeed inspirational to us all driving energizing us all.  I would have to say that the presentation of the Virginia Prince Lifetime Award to Marsha Botzer. alone was worth the trip to Philadelphia.  Having heard her speak previously I knew we were in for a treat, she did not let us down.  Reminding us all of where the community has come, the goals yet to be attained and the vision for the future she inspired everyone.

And the work continues.  As I moved toward the bed and looked at the clock, after 4am, I knew that I would depart the conference renewed.  I hoped I contributed to the regeneration of other lives in some small way.   Departing the hotel I again saw Mr. Stone busy and with next years conference in Austin, Texas already on his mind.

Thanks to all that attended and I hope to have the opportunity to see you in Austin.
